NFL, referees reach deal to end lockout

The NFL struck an eagerly awaited deal with its referees Wednesday night to end its lockout of the sport's regular officials and pave the way for them to return to the field on Thursday.

An agreement between the two sides was reached late Wednesday and negotiators began the work of writing a formal document, according to several people familiar with the negotiations. One of them said the deal was "substantively done." The NFL planned to formally lift the lockout, those people said, when the written deal was completed.
