What You Will Talk About on Thanksgiving Day
Breaking News November 26, 2013 Dear NR friends, I'll take this opportunity to wish you and your families a very Happy Thanksgiving, and to thank you for your patronage, support, and friendship of National Review. Of course, you know I am also going to use this opportunity to try to sell you something! (You can't blame me for that. ) So, how about I sell you . . . a nice cruise, eh? Seriously: Why don't you and your spouse or friends, why don't you sit down – after you've eaten your fill of turkey and stuffing and all the trimmings – and have a conversation about how you are going to go on the National Review 2014 Bermuda Cruise? Let's face it: You've always wanted to go on one, so why not this one? It's scheduled for May 17th to May 22nd, leaving from Cape Liberty, NJ, on Royal Caribbean's Explorer of the Seas. A grand time is in store: there will be plenty of panel session on current events, cocktail receptions, a smoker, dining with our speakers, and, boy oh boy, what speakers we have. Here's our All Star lineup so far: legal scholar John Yoo, former Arizona Republican Senator Jon Kyl, best-selling authors Amity Shlaes and Midge Decter, military/security experts Bing West and John Hillen, syndicated columnist Mona Charen, former Commentary editor Norman Podhoretz, New York Sun editor Seth Lipsky, City Journal editor Brian Anderson, NRO editors-at-large Jonah Goldberg and Kathryn Jean Lopez, NR editor Rich Lowry, political correspondent John Fund, Senior Editors Jay Nordlinger and Ramesh Ponnuru, NRO "Exchequer" blogger Kevin D. Williamson, NRO "Campaign Spot" blogger Jim Geraghty, "Athwart" columnist James Lileks, and social-policy expert Jennifer Marshall. You'll find complete information about the trip at www.nrcruise.com. Great, now what else can I sell you? How about some books? At the National Review Online Store we've got several wonderful items for you to purchase, for yourselves or for Christmas gifts. Let me recommend three authors. The first is Jay Nordlinger's Peace, They Say, his acclaimed (and beautifully written) history of the Nobel Peace Prize The second is Kevin Williamson's The End Is Near, And It's Going to Be Awesome (I love, and am counting on, the subtitle: "How Going Broke Will Leave America Richer, Happier, and More Secure"). Both Kevin and Jay would be quite happy to sign and inscribe your books. And National Review will be happy to send them along as a gift if that's what you'd like. The third is really two books: Florence King's "STET, Damnit!" and "Deja Reviews." You can get both of these revered and very funny collections of her NR oeuvre (Florence is better known to many of you as the author of "The Misanthrope's Corner" and "Bent Pin" columns which graced NR's pages for nearly two decades). We are selling both books in a special combination offer. Now let me tell you about one book we are not selling at the NRO Store, but I think you simply must purchase. It is written by my good friend and frequent NR cruise speaker Daniel Hannan: "Inventing Freedom: How the English-Speaking Peoples Made the Modern World." You can get that at Amazon. National Review will be reviewing "Inventing Freedom" in its next issue, and other publications will be doing the same. Deservedly so. Meanwhile, Dan has just been in the US on a promotional tour: Let me recommend you check out his interview last week with Sean Hannity, as well as his appearance on Fox and Friends. "Inventing Freedom"is a powerful book by one of the international conservative movement's emerging superstars. I heartily recommend you get yourself a copy. Now let me, in closing, dress this email up with an editorial suggestion or three. On NRO today:
