Obama Fades on Foreign Policy As lawmakers in Washington move to approve Obama's plan to arm and train Syrian rebels to fight ISIS, the American people are souring on Obama's leadership. A brand new poll from the New York Times/CBS News finds that Obama's approval rating on handling terrorism is underwater for the first time in his presidency. In other words, more people disapprove of how Obama is addressing terrorism than approve. The American people do not feel as though Obama has a clear strategy to defeat ISIS and feel he hasn't been tough enough in combating its threat. It's not hard to understand why the American people are confused. Over the last few weeks and months we've seen an administration that is similarly confused, sending mixed messages. Ultimately this demonstrates ambivalence to the American people and our allies and weakness to our enemies. Obama and the Democrats should be concerned that the American people believe Republicans are better capable of handling their top two issues, which are terrorism and the economy. As we approach the midterm election, this will certainly be cause for concern for Democrats as they cling to control of the Senate. Obama just seems to be going through the motions, half-heartedly doing the minimum to address ISIS. I think this is in order to make it through the midterm elections, being seen as taking action on the issue. But I have my doubts as to whether Obama is truly committed, long-term, to defeating and destroying ISIS. Members of the military and intelligence community continue to say that boots on the ground may ultimately be necessary in order to defeat ISIS. If and when it comes to that, I'm seriously concerned that Obama will let his rigid, left-wing ideology dictate his decisions rather than the safety and security of America. And keep in mind that this is just Obama's handling of ISIS. There are other foreign policy issues, which we can't ignore. Iran obtaining a nuclear weapon is an example, along with Putin's aggression in Ukraine. While it's true that a majority of Americans do not support boots on the ground in Iraq and Syria, another recent poll finds that 69% of Americans would support troops on the ground in order to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon. To be fair, this poll is the exception to many recent polls which find Americans becoming more isolationist in their views of America's role in the world. But those views may be changing, as we see the threat of terrorism spread throughout America and the world. A New York man was recently charged with plotting to support ISIS and kill American soldiers. And Australian authorities have just uncovered a plot by ISIS to attack and behead Australians in a gruesome publicity stunt. Obama's failure to recognize the truth threat of radical Islam is dangerous to American national security and the world. |
