No, Really, Scott Walker Is the Frontrunner
Morning Jolt February 25, 2015 No, Really, Scott Walker Is the Frontrunner Quinnipiac polls likely Iowa Republican Caucus participants and finds Wisconsin governor Scott Walker leads the pack with 25 percent; 13 percent for U.S. senator Rand Paul of Kentucky, 11 percent each for physician Ben Carson and former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee, and 10 percent for former Florida governor Jeb Bush. No other candidate is above 5 percent and 9 percent are undecided. PPP shows Walker leading nationally at 25 percent; Ben Carson is at 18 percent. The UT-Austin/Texas Tribune poll puts Ted Cruz at 20 percent; Walker is at 19 percent. The Field poll puts Walker ahead in California at 18 percent; Jeb Bush is second with 16 percent. PPP shows Walker second in South Carolina with 18 percent; Jeb Bush leads with 19 percent. You know who's getting awfully close to that "first tier" status in the early going? Ben Carson. He's currently third in Iowa; second in PPP's national poll; at 9 percent in Texas, which is good for fourth; 8 percent in California, which is good for fourth; and at 13 percent in South Carolina, which is tied for third.
Keep an Eye on Carly Fiorina Carly Fiorina's got a SuperPAC now. In advance of Carly Fiorina's speech at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) on Thursday, Feb. 26, Fiorina supporters are launching Carly For America, a SuperPac to lay the groundwork for a potential presidential run. "As Carly decides whether to enter into the 2016 race, Carly For America will continue to build conservative support and help lay the groundwork for a potential presidential candidacy," said Steve DeMaura, executive director of the SuperPac. "Her dedication and understanding of how to unlock the potential of Americans across the country is a breath of fresh air for the GOP. The challenges our nation is facing are unprecedented, and it will take a new type of leader to deliver the conservative reforms we need. Carly has a demonstrated track record of delivering the kind of transformational change—within bureaucracies and within industries—we need to get our country and our economy back on track." And naturally, the SuperPAC unveiled a debut video: I desperately hope that future Carly Fiorina videos feature the return of the Demonsheep, the nightmarish creature that first appeared in videos from her Senate campaign. Notice on her list of staff and advisers: Steve DeMaura, Executive Director – Most recently served as the Political Director of Carly Fiorina's Unlocking Potential Project and is a New Hampshire native who served as Executive Director of the New Hampshire Republican Party. William B. Canfield, General Counsel Carly for America – A nationally recognized expert in federal and state campaign finance law including General Counsel to five GOP presidential campaigns and twice chair of the Standing Committee on Election Law of the American Bar Association. Greg Mueller, President, CRC Public Relations – A former senior adviser to presidential candidates Pat Buchanan and Steve Forbes, senior adviser to numerous statewide candidates, as well as many national advocacy campaigns. Keith Appell, Senior Vice President, CRC Public Relations – A former senior adviser and national spokesman for presidential candidate Steve Forbes, senior adviser to numerous statewide candidates and national advocacy campaigns. Katie Hughes, Senior Account Executive, CRC Public Relations – Former communications director to Rep. Dennis Ross (R-Fla.) and press secretary to former Rep. Mike Pence (R-Ind.). CRC Public Relations is a pretty big mover and shaker in the world of conservative clients. You may recall that last month I wrote, "the former Hewlett Packard CEO has a broader and more interesting résumé than you might think -- member of the CIA's External Advisory Board, committee adviser to Condoleezza Rice, senior adviser at the Center for Strategic and International Studies -- and despite the "nice" CEO image, she's fearless on the attack -- tearing into Hillary for lack of accomplishments, ripping liberals for hypocrisy on abortion, challenging Valerie Jarrett on live television about unequal pay for women at the White House. A cancer survivor with a great personal success story, she may be a much more serious contender for the [vice-presidential] slot than most people think right now." Heading into CPAC, she has the not-so-insignificant advantage of being accomplished and almost entirely dismissed by the political media, so the bar is set pretty low. World War Two Vets Come Home Here's a headline you don't see from the Pentagon all that often: "Airmen Missing From WWII Accounted For." This is not an old story. This news was released by the Department of Defense late Tuesday night: The Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) announced yesterday that the remains of U.S. servicemen, missing in action from World War II, have been accounted for and are being returned to their families for burial with full military honors. Army Air Forces 1st Lts. William D. Bernier of Augusta, Montana; Bryant E. Poulsen of Salt Lake City, Utah; Herbert V. Young Jr. of Clarkdale, Arizona and Tech Sgts. Charles L. Johnston of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; Hugh F. Moore of Elkton, Maryland and Staff Sgts. John E. Copeland of Dearing, Kansas; Charles J. Jones of Athens, Georgia; and Sgt. Charles A. Gardner of San Francisco, California, have been accounted for and buried with full military honors. Jones will be buried Feb. 28 in Athens, Georgia and Johnston will be buried March 2 in Arlington National Cemetery. On March 18, there will be a group burial service at Arlington National Cemetery honoring Poulsen, Copeland and the other crew members. Bernier was buried Sept. 19, 2014, in his hometown. Young was buried Oct. 15, 2014, in Prescott, Arizona Moore was buried on Nov. 11, 2014, in his hometown. Gardner was buried on Dec. 4, 2014 in Arlington National Cemetery. On April 10, 1944, 12 B-24D Liberator crew members took off from Texter Strip, Nazdab Air Field, New Guinea, on a mission to attack an anti-aircraft site at Hansa Bay. The aircraft was shot down by enemy anti-aircraft fire over the Madang Province, New Guinea. Four of the crewmen were able to parachute from the aircraft, but were reported to have died in captivity. Following World War II, the Army Graves Registration Service (AGRS) conducted investigations and recovered the remains of three of the missing airmen. In May 1949, AGRS concluded the remaining nine crew members were unrecoverable. In 2001, a U.S.-led team located wreckage of a B-24D that bore the tail number of this aircraft. After several surveys, DoD teams excavated the site and recovered human remains and non-biological material evidence. DNA from the remains was matched to relatives of the missing airmen. R.I.P. ADDENDA: In Chicago, Mayor Rahm Emanuel is headed to a runoff. If you roll your eyes and conclude that only Jesus could beat Barack Obama's former chief of staff in a Chicago Democratic primary . . . then you're in luck: His runoff opponent is former Illinois State Senator Jesus "Chuy" Garcia, who was outspent 12 to 1 in Tuesday's race. Miraculous!
