RAND PAUL ON THE RISE OF ISIS AND FOREIGN POLICY FAILURES -
NO JAIL FOR MARIJUANA
Rand Paul discusses his ideas on the foreign policy failures of this administration, the rise of ISIS, and he does not want you to go to jail for Marijuana
0:00
let's talk foreign policy little bit I heard you say that the Palestinians if
0:07
they got more they might be less violent what do you meet I think when you
0:12
yourself sort of the Middle Eastern situation everybody says what's the
0:15
solution was the grand solution how do we fix it over there and you know the
0:20
USA has tried to be involved in different peace talks really since I was
0:23
a kid and I'm getting quite worked yet and I went over there about two years
0:28
ago and I thought how can I help you no I think I'm as farrakhan maybe I'll try
0:32
to figure it out and I'll come up with a solution but I came later I'm thinking
0:36
you know maybe there is no one big solution whereby gonna love each other
0:39
holding hands but maybe the incremental solution would be that we tried to
0:44
increase the economic well-being of everybody in the area and that
0:48
particular includes us in the west bank and those in gaza and I think there
0:51
probably are ways that we can maybe do that and I think people are less hungry
0:55
or less less likely to fight do you have a relationship with the Prime Minister
1:00
Netanyahu we've had some conversations here don't think he liked all the things
1:04
I had to say that I did suggest to him that if we can get to a point maybe
1:08
where Hamas were no longer though the government in Gaza and was a government
1:12
that wanted to have a peace process I actually sort of suggested to him that
1:16
maybe there could be a port in Gaza that was under joint security of Israel and
1:21
those who live in gaza because we have a port India country you feel more like a
1:25
more like a country and you feel like you have more control over what comes in
1:29
but also understand the israelis point of view they're concerned about missiles
1:32
and weapons smuggling into Gaza surprise won't happen with hamas you would have
1:37
to happen with a new elected government that one step piece but if they did
1:42
there some incremental piece that may not be that everybody loves each other
1:45
forever and all but it may be a piece where there can be a gradual unraveling
1:51
of sort of the hatred about huge cultural and
1:55
and faith-based divide that they have going on over there you know I'm curious
1:59
because there's such a rigid relationship between at least it's been
2:03
described as so between President Obama and Benjamin Netanyahu do you think
2:07
there's work to be done there to make the israelis maybe feel that we're more
2:11
on their side again do you think we've seen any sort of seating or bleeding of
2:15
friendship I think there may be some between President Obama and Prime
2:21
Minister of Israel I think between the american government in israel though not
2:25
so much I think that there's a great deal of friendship and mutual
2:28
appreciation for the the allies do you think we still have as big a voice and
2:34
that processes we will always had is that need reparation well you know I
2:37
think relations always take continual improvement but I don't think that there
2:42
really isn't anything your rubber ball about our relations with Israel and I
2:46
think that particularly congress I think has a very open and friendly
2:50
relationship with Israel I want to shift gears a little bit to something that
2:54
because of the headlines in recent days and weeks has become probably more
2:59
urgent terms of our foreign policy and that's the Islamic state and its
3:03
capability now in some fourteen countries seven provinces in Afghanistan
3:08
which is an area that we thought we'd be pulling out more than we are now
3:12
according to President Obama we're gonna leave more people behind worth more
3:16
troops behind for a longer period of time
3:18
my question is how would you handle the Syria piece in the puzzle knowing that
3:23
you have to go after Isis or do you feel like you do I think the first thing to
3:27
understand is we need to look at the history of how I Cicero's and how they
3:30
got bigger for example in Libya you have a failed state and a third of Libya now
3:36
pledges allegiance dices it's one of the hotbeds prices because there's no
3:39
government but that might have something to do with the fact that we topple
3:43
Kadhafi in Syria I think we have variations of evil on both sides you
3:48
have a solid on one side and Isis on the other hand people who say well we need
3:53
to defeat us on and have regime change in Syria I think that's a recipe for
3:57
allowing Isis to grow stronger in fact I argued strenuously against bombing a
4:03
sought after he used gas used chemical weapons against its people
4:08
many in our country Republicans and Democrats wanted to bomb Assad and I
4:11
said hey guys wait a minute if you bomb aside you may allow licensed to grow
4:16
stronger so I'm glad I stood up against bombing Assad and I think we need to
4:20
think through our situation before we sometimes can make things worse to
4:25
unintended consequence let me ask you something about that would you have had
4:28
perhaps an effect on the president backing off his red line did you talk
4:32
with the president not particularly the red line after the chemical weapons with
4:37
regard to talking to him one on one but he did come to our conference and I told
4:42
him my point of view is that congress vote on it before he went to war Syria
4:45
and bombing people is war sometimes we all know we're just dropping bombs will
4:49
bombing is part of war and I think I was one of the loudest voices shouldn't have
4:54
some influence on not bombing Assad I hope so
4:57
bombing is war you know it's interesting on outnumbered earlier we got into this
5:02
discussion about our American soldier who was killed making this huge refugee
5:08
rescue dozens of hostages held in Iraq by Isis and the word combat is not being
5:14
used by our federal government but if we in fact our bombing with airplanes we're
5:19
at war for what you're saying you know the other definitional sort of nonsense
5:23
came out of her Clinton and President Obama was a kinetic energy kinetic
5:28
motion they were calling war what is that
5:30
kinetic means you're sort of living like yeah motion that's not war and so I
5:38
think these euphemisms for describing something that's obviously war the brave
5:42
young American who died his parents will think that he died in war and I don't
5:46
think we should degrade that 60 no just calm down or maybe we're not going to
5:51
give him the Medal of you know that he deserves for his honorable service
5:55
because he was just in combat not war
5:57
I think that's a huge mistake and has a desire to our soldiers senator was the
6:02
greatest threat to our national security right now I think are dead I think that
6:07
you can't be a strong country from bankruptcy court and this is why I tell
6:11
people all the time and this is what separates me from most of the republican
6:14
field I don't think you can be a fiscal conservative if you're liberal with
6:20
I think if you wanna be a fiscal conservative you have to be conservative
6:23
with all spending but there's domestic welfare or military what we have in
6:27
washington's the opposite compromise you have people on the right has said we
6:32
need more military spending people on the left one more welfare spending and
6:35
you know what we get more both and that's why we borrow a million dollars a
6:38
minute and I think our debt is growing so large and I think it truly is a
6:43
threat to our national security now
6:44
million dollars is it worth shutting down government to get it right that's
6:49
always the debate and the debate has to be on one hand we could shut down
6:53
government and use that leverage to get reform it's not that's not an end all
6:57
it's not like I we want to shut down government to gleefully round so we shut
7:00
down government the people who want to shut down government to use it as
7:04
leverage to get reform may well be a noble purpose cuz you compare that to
7:09
the status quo so let's say the status quo is that we're just gonna continuing
7:12
resolutions all the spending bills get lumped into one but no reform occurs so
7:18
which is more dangerous to the Republic borrowing a billion dollars a minute or
7:21
temporarily shutting down government to use that leverage to call out the
7:25
wasteful spending I think you should let all spending expire in car to shut down
7:29
what you will I call it letting it all expire and I would immediately try to
7:33
restart the things we need so a minute after it expired I would say you know
7:37
what we need national defense let's decide first what we will spend on
7:41
national defense and then I would go on to other items you know what it would
7:45
take 60 votes in the Senate to pass anything and so wasteful and sometimes
7:49
offensive spending would go away wow that's such an interesting idea so why
7:54
do you think it is that Republicans such a bad rap whenever they talked about
7:58
were gonna shut this down because really the whole government doesn't shut down
8:01
in the way that we think of it I mean we were talking earlier nonessential
8:05
workers go home and continue to collect their paychecks for even less than that
8:08
two-thirds of your government or entitlements they don't shut down at all
8:13
Social Security Medicare Medicaid don't ever shut down when we talk about the
8:17
government shutting down its one-third of government half of that one-third
8:21
military and even the democrats will come together on using vote to reopen
8:25
things with Notre quickly so really what's really shot at the time from this
8:29
bickering one-sixth of government
8:31
almost so little you might not notice what do you think republicans get a bad
8:36
rap when it comes to that
8:37
well they're afraid that it's gonna be blamed on them and they're gonna look
8:40
you're responsible I think the opposite I think what is irresponsible borrowing
8:44
a billion dollars in debt and 18 almost 19 trillion dollar deficit and debt is
8:50
something that I think is irresponsible so I think it's a matter of having the
8:53
debate some are afraid of the debate because they think in the past
8:57
shutdowns have been placed blamed on republicans frankly I'd blame it on the
9:01
democrats because if we can't get to a consensus on spending that requires
9:06
Democrats and the only reason we wouldn't get to 60 votes on some
9:09
spending limitations would frankly because Democrats wouldn't vote for it
9:12
let's talk a little bit about the presidential race in there and where we
9:16
are today on the Democrat side you've probably heard Joe Biden not going to
9:19
get in and then you saw this past week you saw hillary Clinton on the hill in
9:25
the hot seat for 11 hours in the Benghazi committee so that that side of
9:30
the ticket do you think it's that's out of the race is kind of shaping up maybe
9:34
I've been one all along that things it'll be more competitive on the
9:37
Democrat side that people think really why just because I think Hillary Clinton
9:42
is well I mean you know at least half the country thinks she's dishonest in in
9:46
recent polling and so I think that's something hard for her to overcome I
9:50
think Benghazi is not just a partisan issue I think that Benghazi is actually
9:54
an issue of whether or not she has the wisdom and judgment to defend the
9:58
country and the will to defend the country you know i i read earlier that
10:02
you said with Joe Biden out of the race democrats now have a choice between a
10:06
socialist between socialism in corruption why do you put it that way
10:11
that you did say that no tweeting can be kinda mean I don't tweet and so ever
10:18
since I caught it and that was kind of my idea actually because I thought it
10:24
really distill it down one bernie sanders is happy to say the socialist if
10:28
you were here he'd tell you I think socialism is bad I talk a lot of college
10:32
campuses and I say look there's nothing sexy or cool about socialism it is
10:37
implied force and often in history has been the utilization of course to
10:44
who don't do what you want them to its the most anti-choice system probably
10:47
ever concocted by man but by corruption I mean that you know hillary Clinton had
10:53
to approve a couple of different things when she was secretary of state to
10:56
approve the sale of uranium company from United States company to the russian
11:00
government at the same time bill clinton was making almost a million dollars
11:05
giving a speech to the bank was brokering the deal for that just really
11:10
stinks to high heaven it makes me think that's corrupt or something about
11:13
conflict of interest how could bill clinton make a million dollars while
11:17
there was a deal pending before hillary Clinton are proving the sale of a
11:21
company to the russian government yeah where do you see yourself in this race
11:27
what do you offer voters that you think they don't get anyplace else not just as
11:33
the man but your perspective on things I tried to put it really simply a shell
11:37
producer for kids to tell him how different campuses and i dont look I
11:42
don't want government to collect your phone records without a warrant I don't
11:46
want government to put you in jail for marijuana and I don't want government to
11:49
send you another Iraq war you some of their top and I'm the only one
11:53
Republican or Democrat saying that thank you thank you
