Bill, Where Are You . . .

. . . When We Need You?

Dear Friend,

One of the great undertakings of the National Review Institute is the Buckley Legacy Project. We're talking about William F., of course.

Surely you feel, as do I, that in these troubled times, the founder of our movement (indeed, the founder of the National Review Institute, to which I hope you will make a generous contribution) were here to share his wisdom, to bring to bear his unique moral authority, to inspire yet another generation, to blunt those who distort the meaning of "conservative."

The fact is, Bill Buckley created, and has left to us, a huge archive of material that remains smart, sharp, powerful, and influential. And that gets to the purpose of the Buckley Legacy Project, which is -- to make that Buckley material, and all of its potential, available to this generation of conservatives, to provide them with the intellectual force they need to sustain and advance the original mission of National Review: to stand athwart history, yelling stop.

The Institute promotes WFB's legacy in any number of ways. I'll mention just two. Number One: Last year, NRI took the lead in celebrating and promoting the Fiftieth Anniversary of Bill's amazing 1965 New York City mayoral run (I urge you to watch this C-Span coverage of NRI's remarkable panels discussing the long-term consequences of WFB's candidacy).

Number Two: It's a result of Number One. Bill's mayoral run was so impressive that it led to the creation of Firing Line, the award-winning long-running program whose Fiftieth Anniversary we celebrate this year. NRI has done so by bringing the celebration -- including a powerful right-of-center debate on immigration, in a homage to Firing Line's popular and influential feature (remember when Bill and Ronald Reagan faced-off over the Panama Canal Treaty?) -- across the country.

Whether by events or by republishing Bill's works via theme-based pamphlets, or via the Institute's acclaimed Regional Fellows Program (it provides up-and-coming conservatives with an excellent course that we call "Burke to Buckley"), and in so many other ways, NRI is working mightily to unleash the full potential of the Buckley "brand."

And boy oh boy, do we ever need that.

Can you help NRI make that happen? Of course you can: Please make your generous tax-deductible contribution here. And do that knowing that your contribution to NRI will be doubled.

Yes, indeed: Thanks to a generous supporter, every dollar contributed to NRI over the course of this "Spring into Summer Fund Drive" will be matched dollar-for-dollar. We need to raise $100,000 from our supporters by June 30th: Can we count on you to help us reach this goal? To help us carry on the work of NRI, and the Buckley Legacy Project?

This is Day 4 of NRI's effort. We need good conservative men and women to be part of this important project.

I'll close with this: Bill Buckley created NRI to further articulate and advance the mission he first established through National Review. If you care about that mission, if you care about the conservative cause, if you care to support NRI's impactful programs and fellows -- and you do! -- then please make your tax-deductible contribution to the National Review Institute by June 30th.

And see your generosity doubled!

Many thanks and God bless.

Best,
