The First Half of This Crazy Year Comes to an End

June 30, 2016

Dear Jolt Fan,

We're over the hump day, and probably starting to think of checking out for the big Fourth of July weekend . . . but wait! There is so much going on that first needs your attention. And while you'd no doubt prefer that the wisdom-imparting be done by jolly Jim Geraghty, the fact is he is likely on some beach right now getting baked redder than Bernie Sanders' flag collection. I am happy to relief pitch, and will draw my inspiration from one of the giants.

Not the San Fran variety. And kinda short too: I am talking about Elroy Face, the 5'8" Pirates hurler who led the NL thrice (1958, 1961, 1962) is saves, and who had that one magical year — 1958, an 18-1 record with 10 saves in 57 appearances — that is nearly unrivaled in the history of our national pastime.

If you're a baseball fan, surely you've heard of him. But even if you are a political junkie, you might not have heard of Enid Mickelsen. And why folks afraid of her. And why you should give a gol'darn. Well, Tim Alberta tells you the whos, whats, and whys: She is the Rules chairwoman of the upcoming RNC convention. If you don't think that is important, or that she is important, well, you need to recalibrate your thinking mechanism. Tim can help.

Puerto Rico is a mess. A crying-shame hot mess. In a brilliant piece of analysis, Mario Loyola explains how the island has been brought to its knees by the same people and programs and thinking that brought you Detroit.

Did Hillary Clinton keep a secret, off-the-books schedule of meetings with foreign foundation donors as Secretary of State? Inquiring minds, and a federal judge, want to know that, and more. Brendon Bordelon reports.

Victor Davis Hanson tells off Barack Obama.

More VDH: In his new column he sizes up the anti-Brexit backlash and blasts "the hypocrisy of a governing elite that never seems to be subject to the ramifications of its own top-down policies." Do as I say, not as I carbon footprint!

More Brexit: Dan Hannan gets into it with lefty CNN journalist Christiane Amanpour. It's a doozie.

Holy Mother of Betty Crocker! Kat Timpf reports on how a third-grader's talking about "brownies" ended up with cops showing up at a New Jersey school.

Olivia de Havilland turns 100 tomorrow. Happy birthday to a great actress. Turner Classic Movies will be honoring her every Friday night in July. By the way, she was a determined commie battler.

Tomorrow is also the 100th Anniversary of the ghastly Battle of the Somme, which had an insatiable hunger for the lives of young men. May they all Rest in Peace. Please read George Will's column.

The first half of this crazed year ends at midnight tonight. Pray God the second half comes with less insanity, on all fronts.

Best,

Jack Fowler
