Unscathed Democrats

June 29, 2016

Dear Jolt Fan,

Now batting for Jim Geraghty . . .

Well, since you asked, or were about to, here is a pinch hitter of note: Jerry "The Hat" Lynch. One of the best all-time pinch-hitters (Number 10 on the career list), he played from 1954 to 1966, and tied a Major League record in 1961 when he knocked in 25 pinch-hit ribbies for the NL Champ Cincinnati Reds.

Cincinnati — hey, isn't that the locus of the IRS field office that went conservative-hunting at the direction of Lois Lerner? Speaking of whom, Eliana Johnson has a primo NRO piece reporting that new documents show Lerner likely broke the law when she ordered over a million IRS documents — containing confidential taxpayer information — sent to Justice Department lawyers. How in the hell has she not been prosecuted? Well, that was a rhetorical question, no? Anyway, do read Eliana's piece and please share it.

Did you say "Benghazi?" I thought so. Today we have two very worthwhile pieces up on NRO.

One is our formal editorial on the release of the House Select Committee on Benghazi's report. Truth be told, "it is a disappointment." But the piece goes on to say that

the report is a devastating account of staggering dereliction of duty and deception by the president and his top subordinates. Front and center in every phase of this disgraceful episode is Mrs. Clinton, whose appalling judgment and character flaws are amply illustrated in its pages.

Ah, Hillary. In another terrific analysis, this by David French, the obvious is addressed and bemoaned: that because of her role in the Benghazi debacle, Mrs. Clinton's career should be kaput. Yet, thanks in part to all-hands-on-deck help from the MSM, her status is scot-free, and maybe even presidential. How does that happen? David reminds us of the liberal S.O.P.:

The pattern is familiar: When news first breaks, say what needs to be said to escape the news cycle unscathed. Next, when the truth starts to emerge, deny wrongdoing and state that any comprehensive judgment should be withheld pending a full investigation. When the investigation commences, stonewall the investigators and accuse conservatives of being "obsessed" or on a "witch hunt." By the time wrongdoing is finally confirmed beyond any reasonable doubt, the average voter will have forgotten why the scandal was a scandal to begin with, or, if he hasn't forgotten — and actually did withhold judgment — the waters will have become so muddied he won't know whom to believe."

When your blood stops boiling, shift your attention to Texas. Coincidentally, Yours Truly was in Austin yesterday, where much of the talk was about the municipality's jihad against Uber and Lyft. Today on NRO, intern Theodore Kupfer has a great piece of reporting on the Dem lawmakers' ongoing fight against the next car service — Arcade City — seeking to decentralize ride-sharing. All politics is local folks — this story is a primer on how the Left operates.

Turning north, to Cleveland: Tim Alberta reports on the GOP convention rules-change drama.

Okay amigos, back to the salt mines for me. We'll see you tomorrow. Your one day closer to Big Jim's return!

P.S.: I caught this image on Reddit this morning. Could the change in the Great Red Spot be due to man-made inter-planetary other-global warming?
