Smith Fellow at the Manhattan Institute and a contributing editor of City Journal.  Mac Donald's newest book, The War on Cops (2016), warns that raced-based attacks on the criminal-justice system, from the White House on down, are eroding the authority of law and putting lives at risk.  In Are Cops Racist?(2010), another City Journal anthology, Mac Donald investigates the workings of the police, the controversy over so-called racial profiling, and the anti-profiling lobby’s harmful effects on black Americans.  A nonpracticing lawyer, Mac Donald clerked for the Honorable Stephen Reinhardt, U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, and was an attorney-advisor in the Office of the General Counsel of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and a volunteer with the Natural Resources Defense Council. In 1998, Mac Donald was appointed to Mayor Rudolph Giuliani’s task force on the City University of New York. In 2012, she received the Quill & Badge Award for Excellence in Communication from the International Union of Police Associations.

Thriving education at NYU

Andrew Hamilton was named the 16th president of New York University in March hamilton nyu2015. He most recently served as the vice chancellor of Oxford University, the university’s senior officer, after an academic career that took him from Princeton to the University of Pittsburgh, and then to Yale, where he was named provost. Throughout his time in academic leadership positions, he has maintained his scholarly work, including an active research laboratory, and will continue to do so at NYU.  A distinguished chemist and a Fellow of the Royal Society, Dr. Hamilton’s scholarly work lies at the intersection of organic and biologic chemistry. He received his PhD from Cambridge University, his master’s degree from the University of British Columbia, and his undergraduate degree from Exeter University.

Mark Peters is the DOI Commissioner appointed by Mayor Bill de Blasio in Januarypeters mark 2014.  As DOI Commissioner, Mr. Peters leads an agency with oversight of more than 300,000 City employees in 45-plus City agencies and dozens of Boards and Commissions, and includes the Office of the Special Commissioner of Investigation for the New York City School District, which monitors the Department of Education’s 135,000 employees; the Office of the Inspector General for the New York City Housing Authority; and the Office of Inspector General for the New York City Police Department, a unit created in 2014.  Commissioner Peters is a former prosecutor at the New York State Attorney General’s Office where he served as Chief of the Public Corruption Unit and Deputy Chief of the Civil Rights Bureau. In those roles he oversaw cases against a range of companies that diverted public funds, and against public officials, including police departments that violated state and federal laws, and he prosecuted members of a political organization that diverted AIDS funding to election campaigns.
