Dear Friend, Yeah, it was my feast day yesterday, and yes buddy boy, it looks like you dropped the ball again when it came to venerating. We saints expect venerating. Even when we wear these duds. Now I could do the lump of coal thing, or I could give you a make-up. Which I'll do. So, here's what will make me happy today: You send a donation to National Review -- either directly at NRO or via PayPal (or by sending a check to NR at 215 Lexington Avenue, NY, NY 10016) -- so it can do a complete overhaul of NRO. My pals at Bill Buckley's center for intelligent conservative thought are hoping to raise $150,000 to help bankroll that very expensive project (and to earmark some of the funds to cover its important student journalism intern program). I know the world -- heck, I travel it in toto every December 24th (saints really can do that, and a lot more). Anyway, I can assure you that a world with NRO, even a website with technical glitches and hiccups, is a better world. And one with a faster, smoother, better website (I can't wait for all the podcasting that is going to happen there!) will be, well, even better-er. Saints can make up new words if they want to. On the flip side -- no NRO and this cranky world is all the worse. Yeah, I don't want that kind of world. So you help. Especially those of you -- and I know who you are (I've got a list) -- who are always feasting on all the great commentary and analysis NRO provides (VDH, Jonah, Andy McCarthy, Jay, Ponnuru, Lowry, French -- I got a list of them too). There comes a time when you have to throw a tip at the bartender, buy a round, call it what you will. Your time is here, amigo. So Saint Nick says -- donate. $25, $50, $100, $500 or even more -- pick one. You have it, I know you have it, and I know you really have to share it with NR. Let's recap: Old Nick is not so jolly today, thanks in part to you. The missed feast day thing really smarts. Fix it. Ho ho ho, Nicholas, the Sainted P.S.: I do know what December 7th is. It's the 75th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor. Say a prayer for those who were wounded and for those who made the ultimate sacrifice that sorry morning. And for those tough men and women who fought back. |
