Dear Jolters, Jim is off today, and NR's offices are closed. Which means -- this was prepared in advance. But since you're likely in a figgy-pudding coma or dealing with the eggnog DTs this morning, you probably won't notice. But let me ask you to check out NRO when your body tells you: "It's time for some sanity." Go here. Oldie-Goodie-(Saddie): One of Bill Buckley's last columns, from February, 2008. He writes about the other Fowler. So, about that infamous lawsuit Penn State prof Michael Mann has levelled against NR (and CEI, and Mark Steyn, and Rand Simberg): A three-judge panel of the District of Columbia Court of Appeals, over two years after it heard our appeal of a previous bizarre ruling against NR (and, we argue, the First Amendment), rendered a ruling last week that, in the large part, favored Mann. Here is the ruling. John Paul Jones is on Line One: Here is our editorial in response. It's a serious matter, not only for the critical principles involved. The out-of-pockets costs related to this kind of major legal fight are (have been!) daunting. You'll recall that NR is owned by no deep-pocketed sugar daddy. NR is at the forefront of fighting to defend the First Amendment: Maybe you will find this cause worthy of your showing NR some support -- or maybe our current appeal for help with NRO's forthcoming rebuild (here, let's let Charlie Cooke explain) might move your heart to be generous. You can show that generosity here. Let's close with this picture to mark the Second Day of Christmas: Two turtles dive. Rimshot! No groans: Jim is back tomorrow. God bless, Jack Fowler, Publisher P.S.: On the Third Day of Christmas my true love gave to me, a stateroom on the National Review 2017 Atlantic Crossing. |
