The path forward on Obamacare
John, Obamacare must be repealed. Unfortunately, the misguided House health care bill, the American Health Care Act, didn't do that. The AHCA was the perfect marriage of bad policy, bad process, and bad politics. Crafted behind closed doors, it left much of Obamacare in place and would in many ways have made things worse. New Heritage research shows that Obamacare’s regulations – left intact by the AHCA – have been a major driver of health insurance premiums. A broad spectrum of conservative scholars echoed this concern, as The Daily Signal reported last week. This could have been a political nightmare had Congress once again forced through a bill that didn't live up to its promises. Now with that bill withdrawn, we have an opportunity to get it right and fully repeal Obamacare. Heritage will now work to craft a better approach with President Trump, Congressional leadership, and anyone else interested in common-sense health care reform. We must completely repeal Obamacare -- all of it -- and replace it with a health insurance reform that benefits all Americans. In my meetings with the President on Obamacare, he has shown a great openness to conservative solutions and so have leaders in Congress. I am optimistic about our prospects for success. Heritage experts have already created a repeal-and-replace plan, based on the principles of free enterprise and limited government, that benefits everyone. It drives down costs, improves health outcomes, and protects those people most in need. We can still win the battle for an affordable, better health care system that serves struggling American families. Here's what our plan does. It will fully repeal Obamacare. It will limit the federal government’s role in health care and enable individuals and families to purchase health insurance in a competitive, free market. And it will reform and strengthen programs like Medicare and Medicaid to improve care and reduce the cost to taxpayers. Read more about our comprehensive proposal to repeal and replace Obamacare. And when you become a Heritage member, you will play an important and constructive role in pushing conservative victories across the finish line. You will make it possible to fully repeal Obamacare and to fix America's health care system with conservative principles.
