Dear Friend,

Academic Freedom isn't for all academics. Especially not if you're one of the dwindling few conservatives within the profession.

That should come as no surprise.

Every day on NRO, or on worthwhile sites like The College Fix, you find articles about "progressive" administrators – hell-bent ideologues – engaging in retro-Soviet Era tactics and bizarre star-chamber set-ups to accuse, intimidate, suppress, gag, and give the boot to conservative professors (and in many a case, "conservative" can mean someone who is a liberal but open to hearing and discussing all points of view).

So what can you do about this assault on free speech, now under relentless attack by the intolerant Left in the very place – the university – where it should be held sacrosanct? Did you know that same assault occurs in a heralded place of alleged open debate – the floor of the United States Senate – where many liberals are plotting to criminalize protected speech?

I'd like to think, and I do indeed urge, that you can and will help.

Here at National Review Institute, with your support we are bringing our talents, efforts, and resources to bear on this critical need to combat the Left, to fight to protect free speech, on the campus, and everywhere else for that matter.

This acclaimed essayist David French recently became a National Review Institute senior fellow, and he stands as the key figure in NRI's just-launching Center for Unalienable Rights, which will focus on advocating for and defending those freedoms, in particular freedom of speech and worship, that the Left violently believes -- despite their centrality to this glorious experiment that is America – are a threat to its nefarious mission of suppressing individual rights, aggrandizing the state, and pampering the vanguard of the proletariat.

Between now and July 31st, NRI is embarked on an effort to raise $100,000 in initial funding for the Center, which among its efforts will be bringing David and other free-speech champions to American colleges and universities, where they can make the critical case for the First Amendment, and challenge liberal intolerance head on.

Which is something David does right now, in many ways, and particularly via his new NRO podcast, The Liberty Files. It's excellent. You should give it a listen.

Please be part of this effort. Your contribution to NRI will be tax-deductible, and can be made safely and securely, here. To date we have contributions and commitments totaling over $18,000 – so I hope you will find a way to help us reach that important $100,000 goal. Any contribution is greatly appreciated.

Best,

Jack Fowler

P.S. Being a fair guy, I don't want to totally castigate the Left. So let's give the Devil his due: The fact is, when it comes to speech, the Left will do anything and everything to protect and advance one particular right. That's a conservative's Miranda right . . . to remain silent.
