The Other Iconic Buckley Dear Friends, It's impossible not to share this: On Friday, I had the great pleasure of visiting with Judge James L. Buckley in New Haven, where we were both attending the annual conference of Yale University's impressive William F. Buckley Jr. Program. We sat and chatted and laughed for about half an hour – what a singular blessing it was to be with His Honor. At 94 years young, there is no more decent or sweeter soul on this planet than this true conservative icon. Some 47 years ago last week, this great man pulled off one of the most amazing political feats of the 20th Century: He was elected to the United State Senate from New York on the Conservative Party line. What a triumph (look at the photo that attends this missive), one that was personal and ideological. And so very inspiring for countless conservatives. Brother Bill's immediate reflection on the actual election, written for his syndicated column in November of 1970, can be read here – we offer it as a promised treat for enduring NR's Fall 2017 Webathon appeals. About that: We urgently need friends of the website – especially its frequent readers, its round-the-clock denizens, its 24/7 all-you-can-eaters – to kindly donate to our ongoing campaign. Our goal is to raise $200,000. I hate to admit it, but: We are not even halfway there. And we are past Day 15 of this #30DaysHathBucktember effort. We have some serious catching up to do. Why give? Charles Cooke offers a wonderful explanation why we need just some of that support – it's for expanded podcast programming. For a more comprehensive explanation of the four key (vital!) projects NR hopes to launch with your assistance, please read this. NR created the conservative movement. We have sustained it for over six decades. And we are adamant about being here for another year, another decade, another 47 years, and beyond, in the ceaseless fight to protect the freedoms that are central to this great American project (the same liberties despised by the multiculturalists who champion the ever-aggrandizing and ever more-intrusive state). In this, our mutual cause, the projects for which we seek your generosity during these #30DaysHathBucktember will play a pivotal part in necessary successes for our principles, for our grandchildren, and theirs too, and for this Republic which needs now and evermore a National Review to be there, vigilant. Thanks to you. Please make your generous donation here. Via PayPal, contribute here. Or send a check, payable to "National Review" to our new address at 19 West 44th Street, 17th Floor, New York, NY 10036. Many thanks, Jack Fowler Vice President, National Review P.S.: Do consider getting a copy of Senator / Judge Buckley's quite relevant 2014 book, Saving Congress from Itself: Emancipating the States and Empowering Their People. |
