The Senate voted Thursday to block President Trump’s national emergency declaration for the construction of a wall on the U.S.-Mexico border to stop what the president has called an “invasion” of immigrants entering illegally.
In a 59 to 41 vote, the Senate passed a resolution to reject the administration’s declaration.
Trump declared a national emergency last month in order to free up $8 billion of federal money for the construction of the concrete border wall on the southern border he has promised since his campaign. The president made the move after Congress refused to appropriate the $5.7 billion he requested for the wall, granting him only $1.375 billion for barriers on the border.
Congress’s rebuke of the president was bipartisan, with 12 Republicans voting in favor of the resolution. Senators Mitt Romney, Lamar Alexander, Susan Collins, Lisa Murkowski, Rob Portman, Rand Paul, Roy Blunt, Roger Wicker, Marco Rubio, Pat Toomey, Jerry Moran, and Mike Lee voted to curb the presidential declaration.
Trump is expected to veto the resolution, marking the first veto of his presidency.
