Good morning from Washington, where President Trump last evening announced he will name U.S. Circuit Judge Amy Coney Barrett, "one of our nation's most brilliant and gifted legal minds," to fill the Supreme Court seat left empty by the death of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. On this date in 1938, President Franklin Roosevelt writes to German Chancellor Adolf Hitler after the dictator threatened to seize part of Czechoslovakia, urging a peaceful resolution; less than six months later, Germany invades Czechoslovakia.

Senate Democrats have vowed to try to block Barrett's nomination, but that will be hard given her impressive record, fidelity to the Constitution, and respect for the rule of law.
