A majority of likely U.S. voters believe that "sanctuary cities" should have to share the border states’ burden of dealing with an influx of illegal immigrants, according to a new CRC Research poll conducted for the 85 Fund.

The poll, obtained exclusively by National Review, asked: “In order to manage the influx of illegal immigrants crossing the border, the state of Texas has sent buses of immigrants to other states and sanctuary cities including Chicago, New York City, and Washington DC. Do you agree or disagree that sanctuary cities should have to share the burden of dealing with these illegals and not just the border states?”

Sixty-three percent of likely voters agreed that sanctuary cities should have to share the burden, including 38 percent who strongly agreed and 25 percent who somewhat agreed. Almost 25 percent disagreed, including 14.5 percent who strongly disagreed and 10.3 percent who somewhat disagreed.

Twelve percent of respondents were unsure or refused to answer in polling conducted among 1,600 likely voters between September 14 and 18.

A slight majority of Democrats agreed (51 percent), as did 78 percent of Republicans and 63 percent of independents. Eighty-one percent of conservatives, 58 percent of moderates and 49 percent of liberals agreed as well.

Jessica Anderson, executive director of Heritage Action for America, said the poll shows the American people “know that actions speak louder than words.”

“A majority of moderates, grassroots conservatives, and even a plurality of liberals agree that pro-sanctuary city mayors should put their money where their mouths are to take care of the same people they’ve encouraged to illegally come here,” Anderson said.

She added: “Border towns shouldn’t be the only ones who bear the burden of caring for the major influx of illegal immigration fueled by rhetoric from pro-sanctuary city politicians like Joe Biden, Eric Adams, and Muriel Bowser.”

The new poll comes as California governor Gavin Newsom asked the Department of Justice to look into states that are allegedly "kidnapping" illegal immigrants and flying them to other states.

Texas governor Greg Abbott has sent thousands of migrants via bus to Chicago, New York City, and Washington, D.C., as part of his “Operation Lone Star” policy.

Abbott previously said he decided to send busloads of migrants to the sanctuary cities "because of President Biden's continued refusal to acknowledge the crisis caused by his open border policies," saying that "the State of Texas has had to take unprecedented action to keep our communities safe."

"In addition to Washington, D.C., New York City is the ideal destination for these migrants, who can receive the abundance of city services and housing that Mayor Eric Adams has boasted about within the sanctuary city," he said in August when the first busload arrived in New York.

Florida governor Ron DeSantis sent 50 migrants from Texas to Martha's Vineyard in Massachusetts last week.

Roughly 24 hours after their arrival from San Antonio, Texas, the group of Venezuelans was transported on buses from St. Andrews Church in Edgartown on Martha's Vineyard to Joint Base Cape Cod.

On Tuesday, several of the illegal immigrants filed a class-action lawsuit against DeSantis and Florida Department of Transportation secretary Jared Perdue claiming that the defendants orchestrated a plan with other unnamed individuals to troll "streets outside of a migrant shelter in Texas and other similar locales, pretending to be good Samaritans and offer humanitarian assistance."

The suit claims the unnamed individuals gave the illegal immigrants $10 McDonald’s gift certificates to win their trust and then falsely said they would receive assistance in other states if they boarded planes, which they were allegedly told were headed to Boston or Washington, D.C.

"These immigrants, who are pursuing the proper channels for lawful immigration status in the United States, experienced cruelty akin to what they fled in their home country. Defendants manipulated them, stripped them of their dignity, deprived them of their liberty, bodily autonomy, due process, and equal protection under the law . . . in furtherance of an unlawful goal and a personal political agenda," the lawsuit alleged.

It goes on to argue that the plaintiffs, illegal immigrants from Venezuela, were "authorized" to remain in the country because they immediately turned themselves over to federal immigration officials after crossing the border.

Senator Marco Rubio (R., Fla.) blasted the lawsuit during an appearance on America’s Newsroom on Fox News.

“People came into this country illegally, violating our laws, and the first thing they do is get lawyers and use our laws to sue an elected governor, to sue a state,” he said. “I mean, just think about that: They just got here, they’re not even here legally, they didn’t enter the country the proper way, and they’re immediately in court and demanding rights and claims under our laws.”

He added: “This is outrageous. . . . What other country in the world would even tolerate that?”

Customs and Border Protection agents have encountered 2 million migrants this fiscal year, the most in history, the agency announced Tuesday.

"Failing communist regimes in Venezuela, Nicaragua, and Cuba are driving a new wave of migration across the Western Hemisphere, including the recent increase in encounters at the southwest U.S. border," CBP Commissioner Chris Magnus said in a statement.

Agents had 55,333 unique encounters with illegal immigrants from Venezuela, Cuba, and Nicaragua — a 175 percent increase over the same time last year.

Rubio said that while the three countries are contributing to mass migration in a huge way, migrants are coming from “all over the world.”

“It’s from everywhere, it’s uncontrolled, it’s out of control, and the hypocrisy of all these communities that say, ‘Oh, we welcome these immigrants; we want them here,’ but within 24 hours Martha's Vineyard had deported the immigrants to Cape Cod.”
