House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s husband, Paul Pelosi, was “violently assaulted” by an intruder in the couple’s San Francisco home, the speaker’s congressional office said Friday morning.
“Early this morning, an assailant broke into the Pelosi residence in San Francisco and violently assaulted Mr. Pelosi. The assailant is in custody and the motivation for the attack is under investigation,” according to a statement from Drew Hammill, spokesman for the Democratic leader. He said Paul Pelosi was transported to a hospital to receive medical attention and is “expected to make a full recovery.”
“The Speaker and her family are grateful to the first responders and medical professionals involved, and request privacy at this time,” Hammill added.
San Francisco is one of the major California cities that has experienced a startling crime surge in the last couple of years. Since January of this year, larceny theft is up 15.3 percent, assault is up 11.1 percent, robbery is up 5.2 percent, and rape is up 8.2 percent, according to statistics from the city police department. The situation for businesses has become so volatile that some major companies have closed San Francisco locations. Active wear brand Cotopaxi, a competitor to Patagonia, announced earlier this month that it would shutter its San Francisco store because of repeated break-ins and rampant crime in the area.
Crime has been an issue that Democrats have accused Republicans of pouncing on and exploiting to maximize electoral gains in the 2022 midterms. The lawlessness has hit increasingly close to home, though, for politicians and celebrities living in California. Los Angeles particularly has seen a spike in home burglaries.
