Good morning,
Welcome to the news for independent thinkers
Biden Quits!
Why Biden finally dropped out . . . Early Saturday, Biden told senior aides it was "full steam ahead" for the campaign. But by later that evening, he had changed his mind following a long discussion with his two closest aides. Steve Ricchetti, who's been with Biden since his days in the Senate, drove to see the president at his house on the Delaware shore on Friday. Mike Donilon arrived on Saturday. In addition to presenting new concerns from lawmakers and updates on a fundraising operation that had slowed considerably, they carried the campaign's own polls, which came back this week and showed his path to victory in November was gone. Politico
Remember, this was all about the polls, not what's good for the country. Once Democrats decided Biden would lose them the House and the Senate, it was over for him. That he can't complete a sentence wasn't a big issue.
The help got a one-minute notice . . . At 1:45 p.m. Sunday, President Joe Biden's senior staff was notified that he was stepping away from the 2024 race. At 1:46 p.m., that message was made public. It was never Biden's intention to leave the race: Up until he decided to step aside Sunday, he was all in. His campaign was planning fundraisers and events and setting up travel over the next few weeks. Associated Press
Trump says Biden 'is not fit to serve': 'Who is going to be running the country?' . . . Former President Trump said President Biden "was not fit to run for president" and is not — and "never was" fit to serve. "He is the worst president in the history of our country," Trump told Fox News Digital in a phone interview Sunday afternoon. "There has never been a president so bad." "He is not fit to serve," Trump continued. "And I ask — who is going to be running the country for the next five months?" Fox News
Kamala Harris, the $100 million woman . . . Vice President Kamala Harris, the second half of the now broken Biden-Harris 2024 ticket, must become the presidential nominee, or the millions of dollars their campaign has raised for the general election will have to be refunded, according to federal election rules. Nearly $100 million is at stake, the amount the Biden-Harris campaign has in the bank. The funding rules are likely to bolster efforts to unite the Democratic Party around Harris. Washington Examiner
Barack Obama withholds his endorsement . . . Former President Barack Obama didn't endorse Kamala Harris — saying Democrats would pick an unnamed "outstanding nominee" in his first statement on President Biden stepping aside from the party's ticket. Obama, 62, was joined by former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) in not immediately backing the 59-year-old vice president — following reports last week that both favored an "open" process to replace Biden. "We will be navigating uncharted waters in the days ahead," Obama said. New York Post
Biden dropping out could force an open convention at the DNC . . . The current DNC rule states: "Delegates elected to the national convention pledged to a presidential candidate shall in all good conscience reflect the sentiments of those who elected them." With Biden out of the race, his delegates would be free to vote for whoever tossed their hat in the ring. Biden's exit allows other Democratic candidates to enter the race and attempt to lobby the delegates before voting day. New York Post
Potential Harris VPs begin to line up . . . Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, for instance, "would be an excellent choice" to share the ticket, said Philadelphia Democratic Party chair and former Rep. Bob Brady. Govs. Andy Beshear of Kentucky and Gov. Roy Cooper of North Carolina are both being considered as running mates, according to a person familiar with the conversations. And a Democratic strategist close to the White House said that Sen. Mark Kelly (D-Ariz.) is also under consideration. The people were granted anonymity to speak freely about the new political dynamic. Politico
Betting markets favor Harris at the top, PA Gov. Josh Shapiro for VP . . . Political betting markets on Sunday pegged Vice President Kamala Harris and Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro as the favorites to appear on the Democratic presidential ticket in the aftermath of President Biden's decision to drop out of the race. Harris, 59, is a massive 1/9 favorite (-900) to be Democratic presidential nominee, according to wagers placed on BetOnline.ag. The vice president has been endorsed by Biden, 81, but has not received former President Barack Obama's stamp of approval. New York Post

Secret Service said to have denied requests for more security at Trump events . . . Top officials at the U.S. Secret Service repeatedly denied requests for additional resources and personnel sought by Donald Trump's security detail in the two years leading up to his attempted assassination at a rally in Pennsylvania last Saturday. Agents charged with protecting the former president requested magnetometers and more agents to screen attendees at sporting events and other large public gatherings Trump attended, as well as additional snipers and specialty teams at other outdoor events. Washington Post

Comer to urge Secret Service director to resign at hearing . . . House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer (R-KY) will call for Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle to resign when she appears before his committee on Monday for a hearing on the assassination attempt against former President Donald Trump. Comer will say, according to excerpts of his prepared remarks, that it is his "firm belief" that Cheatle should step down following the Secret Service's grave security failure at a Trump rally that left one dead and two seriously injured. Washington Examiner
Gen Z influencers rave about Trump VP pick JD Vance. . . Some conservative Zoomers say Trump gained ground in the race to win over the youngest voting bloc by choosing Ohio Sen. JD Vance – the first millennial to be added to a presidential ticket – especially as age concerns ring loud and clear in the political realm. "If we look at JD Vance specifically as VP, one of [Gen Z's] biggest concerns is the age" of then-candidate Biden and Trump, podcast host and Gen Z influencer Christian Hodges said. Fox News

New laws in New Hampshire protect women's sports, ban sex changes for minors . . . Ensurance of "fairness and safety in women's sports," and a ban on genital reassignment surgery was signed into law in New Hampshire on Friday by Gov. Chris Sununu. The governor signed House Bill 1205, preventing males from participating in female sports. One day after Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump said the Title IX rewrite would be reversed if he returns to the White House, Sununu said the new law will protect "fairness and safety in women's sports by maintaining integrity and competitive balance in athletic competitions." Hundreds of migrants leave southern Mexico in a new caravan headed for US border . . . Hundreds of migrants from around a dozen countries left from Mexico's southern border on foot Sunday, as they attempt to make it to the U.S. border. Some of the members of the group said they hoped to make it to the U.S. border before elections are held in November, because they fear that if Donald Trump wins, he will follow through on a promise to close the border to asylum-seekers. Overturned truck covers NC highway ramp in steak sauce . . . It was a not-so-sweet, not-so-savory situation Wednesday morning on an Interstate 440 ramp in Raleigh, N.C., when an overturned truck spilled thousands of gallons of steak sauce. Police said the tractor-trailer overturned about 1:45 a.m. on the ramp from Wade Avenue to I-440 and lost its load of steak sauce and teriyaki marinade gallon bottles into the roadway. UPI
Thank God. Putting steak sauce on your steak is an insult to the cattle who gave their lives for your New York Strip. Better to use it for highway decoration.
