Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh killed in Tehran by Israeli airstrike . . . Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh was killed in Iran by what the terror group said was an airstrike carried out by Israel early Wednesday. Haniyeh, who was one of Hamas' most senior officials, was in Tehran to attend the inauguration ceremony of Iran's new president when he was killed, Iran's Revolutionary Guard announced. Hamas pointed the finger at Israel, stating that its leader was killed "in a Zionist airstrike on his residence in Tehran after he participated in the inauguration of Iran's new president." New York Post
Acting Secret Service chief 'ashamed' of Trump rally shooting security gaps . . . Secret Service acting director Ronald Rowe in a joint congressional hearing Tuesday admitted he was "ashamed" of security lapses that kept agents in the dark about the shooter and nearly led to the assassination of former President Donald Trump. Rowe, who was elevated to the position last week following the former Director Kimberly Cheatle's resignation, said the July 13 shooting at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania was "a failure on multiple levels" during testimony before the Senate. New York Post
Acting Secret Service Director played key role in culling Trump protection . . . Acting Secret Service Director Ronald Rowe was directly involved in denying additional security resources and personnel, including countersnipers, to former President Donald Trump's rallies and events—despite repeated requests by the agents assigned to Trump's detail in the two years leading up to his July 13 attempted assassination. Rowe succeeded former Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle. But both Rowe and Cheatle were directly involved in decisions denying requests for more magnetometers, additional agents, and other resources to help screen rallygoers at large, outdoor Trump campaign gatherings. Kamala's much older lover gave her a BMW and salary-boosting job as she climbed Democrat ranks . . . As a young prosecutor, Kamala Harris was gifted a BMW and lavished with trips to Paris and the Oscars by a much older lover who also jumpstarted her meteoric rise in California politics, according to reports. The current vice president famously had a relationship with Democratic Party kingmaker Willie Brown in 1994 when she was 29 and he was 60, and when he was serving as speaker of the California Assembly. New York Post
Trump campaign declares Project 2025 dead . . . Former President Donald Trump's campaign on Tuesday declared Project 2025 dead, as it sought to put distance between itself and a conservative plan that has turned into a political problem for the GOP. Democrats had said the collection of ideas, including good-government proposals and far-right thoughts about reshaping the executive branch, was a road map for what a second Trump term would look like. But his campaign said Project 2025, orchestrated by The Heritage Foundation and supported by a coalition of other conservative groups, was never a Trump campaign product. Washington Times
Trump invite to black journalist convention sparks backlash . . . A planned appearance by Donald Trump at a convention of Black journalists has prompted an intense backlash, with members of the organization saying the invitation is inappropriate and should be rescinded. Members of the National Association of Black Journalists erupted in protest Tuesday following the announcement that Trump would attend a Q&A at the convention this week in Chicago. A co-chair of the event, Washington Post columnist Karen Attiah, announced she would step down. Politico

Harris to hold first rally with running mate Tuesday in Philadelphia . . . Vice President Kamala Harris is expected to announce her running mate by Tuesday, when she will hold her first rally with her pick in Philadelphia. The two will barnstorm cities in seven swing states in four days. In addition to Philadelphia, they'll hit western Wisconsin, Detroit, Raleigh, Savannah, Phoenix and Las Vegas. Politico
GOP ready to pounce on Harris policy pivots . . . Vice President Harris's quick pivot to her White House bid has prompted an about-face on multiple key issues that could affect outcomes in battleground states, handing former President Trump and Republicans a prime attack line. She no longer supports a ban on fracking, a campaign official said, nor does she support expanding the Supreme Court. She no longer backs a single-payer health care system. The Hill
Democrats happy with Harris . . . Vice President Kamala Harris appears to have energized Democrats in the early days of her candidacy, with the surge in warm feelings extending across multiple groups, including some key Democratic constituencies that had been especially tepid about President Joe Biden, a new poll shows. About 8 in 10 Democrats say they would be somewhat or very satisfied if Harris became the Democratic nominee for president, according to the survey from The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research, which was conducted after Biden withdrew from the race. Republicans are happy with her too, but for different reasons.

Rapes surge in New York City amid police personnel shortage, fewer patrols . . . Attacks on women are on the rise in New York City, a trend some in the city are blaming on a persistent shortage of police that has meant fewer officers on patrol. New York Police Department statistics show a 10% jump in rapes through July 28, with the streets around tourist-centric Times Square and neighborhoods near Brooklyn's Prospect Park experiencing more of the violent sexual assaults. The rise in sex crimes comes during an apparent summer surge as the year-over-year increase in rapes began accelerating in May. Washington Times
Simone Biles and Team USA power to Olympic gold in women's gymnastics . . . The self-described "Redemption Tour," the moniker given to a team filled with women who wanted to return to the Games for deeply personal reasons, ended with Biles and the Americans where they have almost always been since she burst onto the scene 11 years ago: on top of the podium, the rest of the world looking up. Eight years after winning gold in Rio with a team that called Aly Raisman grandma because she was all of 22, Biles — now 27 and married — was back again with Jade Carey (24), Chiles (23), Lee (21) and teenager Hezly Rivera at her side. "We don't have to be put in the box anymore," Biles said about a group that has dubbed itself "The Golden Girls." Associated Press
