New York City Mayor Eric Adams has been indicted by a grand jury on federal criminal charges, according to two people familiar with the matter, an extraordinary culmination to weeks of searches, subpoenas and resignations of top officials that have thrust the city's government into crisis. The indictment detailing the charges against Adams, a Democrat, was expected to be unsealed Thursday, according to the people. In a speech recorded at his official residence, Adams said he would remain in office, describing any charges he may face as "entirely false, based on lies." Associated Press
Who is NYC Public Advocate Jumaane Williams, next mayor if Eric Adams steps down . . . The next acting mayor of New York City — if federally indicted Eric Adams were to step down — would be Public Advocate Jumaane Williams, a lefty Democrat who is often critical of cops and once ran a failed campaign for governor. Williams, a self-described activist-politician who began his tenure as public advocate in 2019, has held elected office since 2010 when he first served on the City Council. New York Post

Vice President Kamala Harris recited familiar talking points and dished out indecipherable word salads Wednesday evening with MSNBC, Stephanie Ruhle, who openly supports her campaign, Stephanie Ruhle. Asked about the American voters "who don't see themselves" in her economic proposals, Harris said: "Well, if you are hardworking, if you have, uh, the dreams and the ambitions and the aspirations of what I believe you do, um, you're in my plan," she said. Kamala Harris pledged to use the might of the government to support domestic manufacturing and help the U.S. beat China in the industries of the future. Harris on Wednesday said that if elected president, she would support a new tax credit that will invest tens of billions of dollars in domestic manufacturing. The credit would aim to create jobs in cutting-edge fields such as biotechnology and aerospace production, and to strengthen traditional industries such as iron and steel, Harris said in a policy document. Poll says Vance less popular than Walz as debate nears . . . Sen. JD Vance (R-Ohio), former President Trump's running mate, is less popular than his Democratic counterpart, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz (D), several days before the two face off in a vice presidential debate, according to a new survey. The poll, conducted by The Associated Press, found that 57 percent of registered voters have an unfavorable view of Vance, up from 48 percent in an August poll. Only 27 percent of registered voters have a favorable view of Vance. Walz scores more favorably, with 42 percent having a favorable view and 32 percent having an unfavorable view. The Hill
Walz admin to hold racially segregated retreat for librarians . . . Minnesota State Library Services, part of Democratic Gov. Tim Walz's administration, plans to use public funds to pay for a retreat intended exclusively for "BIPOC" librarians. The Walz administration describes the event, which will take place in October, as "a day of professional development and network-building designed specifically for BIPOC library workers of Minnesota," according to a registration page. "BIPOC" stands for "black, indigenous and people of color." Daily Caller

Republicans are leaving Washington projecting confidence about their chances of returning to the Capitol in November knowing they'll have full control of government in 2025. Republicans in their final legislative days before heading home for the final weeks of a frantic campaign said they are confident the House GOP will retain its majority and that former President Trump, who is locked in a tight race with Vice President Harris, will emerge victorious. Former President Donald Trump described Ukraine in bleak and mournful terms Wednesday, referring to its people as "dead" and the country itself as "demolished," and further raising questions about how much the former president would be willing if elected again to concede in a negotiation over the country's future. Trump argued Ukraine should have made concessions to Russian President Vladimir Putin in the months before Russia's February 2022 attack, declaring that even "the worst deal would've been better than what we have now." Gavin Newsom vetoed a bill Wednesday that would have helped Black families reclaim or be compensated for property that was unjustly taken by the government. The bill would have created a process for families to file a claim with the state if they believe the government seized their property through eminent domain due to discriminatory motives and without providing fair compensation. Graham announces bill to end birthright citizenship for children of illegal immigrants . . . Citing the surge in illegal immigrants who've come into the U.S. over the last few years, Sen. Lindsey Graham on Wednesday announced new legislation to prevent children born to them from becoming automatic citizens.
The South Carolina Republican said his legislation will also apply to children of legal but temporary visitors. That's an effort to crack down on so-called "birth tourism," which sees pregnant women arrive as visitors with the intent of giving birth. Washington Times

Israel shows no sign of letting up on Hezbollah . . . Israel continued to strike at Hezbollah in Lebanon overnight and into Thursday morning, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu telling troops to keep fighting at full force even as diplomats raced to establish a temporary cease-fire along the border and head off a possible Israeli ground invasion. The Israeli military said it hit 75 targets overnight in eastern Lebanon's Bekaa Valley area and in southern Lebanon, both strongholds for the militant group, including weapons-storage facilities, launchers, and militants. Ukraine's winter energy woes expected to weigh heavily on a tired people . . . s Ukraine scrambles to repair the damage that Russian missiles are inflicting on the country's power stations, the weary population is facing what is shaping up to be one of the worst winters of the war so far. Power outages are a given — because Ukraine's energy system is already working at a deficit after receiving heavy blows from Russian strikes this year — but the estimates vary on just how bad it will be. The best-case scenario is just four hours of power cuts a day, but it could also end up being 20 hours of darkness or more a day in the depths of Ukraine's frigid winter. Washington Post
World's longest-serving death row inmate acquitted in Japan . . . An 88-year-old man who is the world's longest-serving death row inmate has been acquitted by a Japanese court, after it found that evidence used against him was fabricated. Iwao Hakamada, who has been on death row for more than half a century, was found guilty in 1968 of killing his boss, the man's wife and their two teenage children. He was recently granted a retrial amid suspicions that investigators may have planted evidence that led to his conviction for quadruple murder. BBC

Americans face financial strain as savings dwindle . . . According to the Federal Reserve, America's savings rate just hit a fresh low while credit card balances hit a record high—with 25% interest. In short, the median American is currently scrounging for coins in the couch and putting the Hamburger Helper on the visa. According to the Bureau of Economic Analysis, the nation's personal savings rate just hit 2.9%. That's 2.9 cents on the dollar. That's the second worst rate in 75 years. What's driving it is that, according to a new analysis, inflation-adjusted real median household income actually dropped since 2019. Daily Signal

Hurricane Helene threatens 'unsurvivable' storm surge and vast inland damage . . . ast-moving Hurricane Helene was advancing Thursday across the Gulf of Mexico toward Florida, threatening an "unsurvivable" storm surge in northwestern parts of the state as well as damaging winds, rains and flash floods hundreds of miles inland across much of the southeastern U.S., forecasters said. Helene is expected to be a major hurricane — meaning a Category 3 or higher — when it makes landfall on Florida's northwestern coast Thursday evening. Disneyland mom hauled out in cuffs alongside hysterical children she tried sneaking into park . . . A mother was hauled out of Disney California Adventure Park alongside her hysterical children after she tried passing the kids off as toddlers so they could sneak into the park for free. Footage posted to TikTok on Wednesday captured the unidentified mother surrounded by Disney security and being led out of the park in cuffs by Anaheim police officers. Her two young girls are seen holding onto their mother on both sides, bawling their eyes out and shouting "Help!" in Spanish. New York Post
Tool-using chimp rips eight-month-old girl from mother's arms and butchers her . . . A famous tool-using chimpanzee ripped a baby girl from her mother's arms before taking her into the forest to butcher her and harvest her organs. Distraught mother Seny Zogba was working in a cassava field in Bossou, in Guinea, when a chimp sunk his teeth into her and stole her eight-month-old baby, named as Yoh Hélène. Chief researcher Gen Yamakoshi chillingly told The Times the gruesome killing was because the chimps 'no longer fear humans'. An angry mob directed their fury towards the scientists who have been studying the remarkable animal community for decades. Daily Mail

Pennsylvania bakery known for its election cookie poll is swamped with orders . . . Lochel's Bakery in Hatboro, Pa., is swamped with orders. People are driving from a couple hours away to buy the cookies in person and shipment orders are coming from as far away as Alaska. The bakery sells 4-inch (10-centimeter) round sugar cookies, one with blue and white sprinkles and a Harris 2024 label on it and the other with red and white sprinkles and a Trump 2024 label on it. The sale of each Harris 2024 cookie counts as a vote in the poll for Harris and likewise for Trump. The cookie poll started in 2008 and accurately predicted the winner the first three times, but not in 2020, when Trump lost the election for the White House to Democrat Joe Biden. Associated Press
