Control tower at National Airport understaffed before deadly collision . . . The air traffic control tower at Reagan National Airport was understaffed on Wednesday evening when a passenger plane and a military helicopter collided in midair, according to a government report about the circumstances surrounding the disaster that killed 67 people and sparked renewed debate around the airport's crowded airspace. According to the report, described to The Washington Post, two people were handling the jobs of four among other colleagues inside National's control tower at the time of the collision. Another plane heading to Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport almost crashed into a helicopter on Tuesday night, the night before an American Airlines flight collided with a military helicopter and plunged into the Potomac River. Republic Airways Flight 4514 was forced to abort its first landing attempt at the airport on Tuesday after Air Traffic Control warned that a helicopter was in its vicinity. 2 US Service Academies End Minor in Diversity and Inclusion . . . West Point Military Academy and the Air Force Academy have both ended their "Diversity and Inclusion Studies" minors. As late as Jan. 8, West Point, based in New York, offered its diversity, equity, and inclusion minor, while as of Jan. 9 the Air Force Academy, based in Colorado, still offered its DEI minor, according to internet archives.
