Dear Diogenes: Our new research takes a deep dive into the FBI's active shooting reports. Over the past decade (2014–2023), police officers stopping these attacks accidentally shot and killed two fellow officers and two civilians—just 1.14% of cases. But did you know that among the 180 concealed handgun permit holders who intervened in active shootings, only one accidentally shot a bystander? Not once has a permit holder interfered with police stopping an attack. Any guesses on how often permit holders or police officers are killed while stopping these attacks? I think you'll be surprised by our findings. The Crime Prevention Research Center teamed up with the Peace Officers Research Association of California, the California State Sheriff's Association, and the California Association of Highway Patrolmen to file an Amicus brief urging the U.S. Supreme Court to take up the issue of gun-free zones. Anyone reading it will see that I provided the bulk of the data and analysis. The real win? Getting major California police associations to agree on the dangers of these so-called "gun-free" zones. A new op-ed in The Federalist tackles a critical but often-overlooked issue in fixing the politicization of the FBI and DOJ—crime data. When the government distorts or manipulates crime statistics, it can control the political narrative. The op-ed exposes specific cases where federal agencies have used data to push an agenda. Meanwhile, another op-ed in The Washington Times breaks down President Trump's pivotal executive order protecting the Second Amendment. It outlines several Biden gun control policies that need urgent reversal. In my last email, I mentioned my op-ed with a Wyoming state senator supporting a bill to eliminate the state's gun-free zones. Since then, I very briefly testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee (which unanimously passed the bill) and a letter that responded to attacks on our op-ed in Wyoming's largest newspaper. My testimony even sparked a detailed discussion in that paper. Media appearances on the Larry Elder Show, Detroit's Morning Answer, and One America News discussed illegal alien crime. Other appearances on Full Measure with Sharyl Attkisson and One America News explained the political biases in the FBI data. I have moved to Salt Lake City. Our new address is Crime Prevention Research Center, 358 S 700 E, Ste B, B409, Salt Lake City, UT 84102. We have updated our list of defensive gun uses by people legally carrying concealed handguns for December 2024. If you haven't already seen it, please watch our new video with John Stossel, which covers our new research showing errors in the FBI's active shooting reports. We need help getting our research out. It doesn't do us any good to do all this work if people don't see it. If you have friends you think might find our emails interesting, please encourage them to sign up by sending them the link here. Thank you very much. We need your support to continue doing the work that we do. Our end of the year donations are I don't think that there is any organization with as small of a budget that regularly produces as much as we do. Thank you very much. . Research . Op-eds .
